Community Involvement
Listowel Christian School seeks to develop a growing relationship with its broader community while at the same time engaging its students in activities which put their faith into action. Many opportunities are available within our community in which the students participate.
Terry Fox Run
As part of a team event in September, students raise money and are challenged to run around the perimeter of the school as fast and as far as they can within a certain time frame. Spirit Teams not only gain points for their team, but they gain satisfaction in supporting local and worldwide research for the cause of and cure for cancer. This past year, over $1,000 was raised!
Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking Competition
Every year during the winter months, students in grades 5-8 research and develop a 4-6 minute speech on a topic of their choice. An in-school classroom competition narrows the field to the top three presenters who compete at the Legion against students from other area schools.
Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day
The RCL always invites students to reflect upon and remember the benefits and costs of war. Intermediate students participate in a poster and poetry competition in the fall; the grade 7 and 8 students participate in the Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph by walking in the parade, joining in the singing, listening to the minister, and laying a wreath.
Farm Credit Corporation Drive Away Hunger
Again, as part of a team event, students are asked to donate food that replenishes the local food bank. In this two part fun competition, the total amount of food is weighed (258 kg of food were donated!) and the resulting food item sculpture is judged.
Operation Christmas Child
Acknowledging that they have much and so many children in the world have much less, students were happy to support Operation Christmas Child by filling 98 shoeboxes with necessary items to delight and encourage children in impoverished countries.
Salvation Army Toy Drive
Every December, grade seven and eight students volunteer their time at the Salvation Army Church in Listowel. For an afternoon, they are assigned the task of sorting donated toys into different age approptiate categories; in doing so, the students help the church prepare for special Christmas deliveries to families who appreciate the extra gifts.

North Perth Christmas Parade
Every year, several LCS children climb aboard the decorated Christmas float, dressed in costumes reflecting the nativity scene, and sing out the wonderful news of our Saviour's birth. Enthusiastic parents walk alongside handing out goody bags to eager children lining the streets of Listowel. Organized by the Promotion Committee, this event is a wonderful way to share God's good news to mankind and to show on what basis LCS teaches its children.
Redeemer College Science Fair
Every other year, Redeemer University College hosts a science fair for grade seven and eight students in Ontario Christian schools. Having to start well ahead of time, students brainstorm ideas of research, experiment, or innovation. They formulate a hypothesis and procedure, and begin their study. Observations are documented in a journal, a Christian perspective is developed, and results are gained. Students are required to neatly and effectively display their projects on a board and be able to thoroughly and clearly answer judge asked questions. After an in-school science fair, the top three or four projects are selected and entered into Redeemer's science fair. LCS students have been pleased with their first and second standard ribbons for projects well done.
Adopt-a-Highway
For many years, in conjunction with the Adopt-a-Highway program, Listowel Christian School has been responsible for road clean-up along the stretch of highway in front of the school. Every fall, the grade eight students, along with parent volunteers, don their vests and gloves, grab several garbage bags, and begin an afternoon of roadside and ditch meandering, looking for garbage. In the spring, the grade seven students get this opportunity to care for God's creation and serve the town of Listowel.
Building Block Bonanza
Each spring, in an effort to promote old fashioned fun and creativity, to welcome visitors to the school within a casual atmosphere, and to contribute to the workings of a supportive community, the LCS Promotion Committee organizes a Building Block Bonanza for the grade school age children in Listowel and area. With three different grade categories each working on different themes, children are challenged to design a vehicle or structure using building blocks like LEGO. Along with their projects, entrants are asked to write a short description of their design. After judges deliberate, the top three placements in each category are awarded a monetary prize.
